Ryan has typically enjoyed his summers and while this past summer may not have seemed much different to him, it truly was very different.

I'm so proud of Ryan as he gradually tries to expand the kinds of foods he eats.  I think a large part of this is directly related to a culinary class he took this past year in high school.  At 19, he is more aware of other foods and I imagine this is part of the reason he is willing to try new and different foods.

Ryan came into my room the other night and said the sweetest things to me.  He's very good about saying thank you and being polite - he knows that proper manners are very important.  But this night was different.

One of the great things about the end of the school year is the possibility of field trips for the students.  This year was no exception.  Ryan received a notice about a small amusement park about an hour away that his class was going to.  I wanted him to be able to go but did NOT want to be the chaperone for the trip.  It's important that Ryan go without me.

Yes - Ryan eats fast food and I do as well on occasion.  I know this is frightening to some parents but that is the reality of my world.  I can eat a grilled chicken sandwich and do not feel guilty.  Ryan eats fried which I know is not healthy but there are times when time is short, my day has been long and fast food is the easiest option.

Just when I think I have a handle on Ryan's teachers, he throws me for a loop.  While he has most of the teachers for the second semester, there are a couple of classes that have different teachers.  Some of the classes are only one semester classes.

With so many sad stories about the decay of humanity, how wonderful to hear about the kindness of others.  By now, a lot of people have heard about the heartwarming story of a mother traveling on a plan with her three year old daughter who has autism.  A bit nervous about the plane ride since she never quite knows how her child will behave, it can be stressful for parents.  Even if your child does not have special needs, flying can be exhausting!

Like millions of others in this world, I enjoy watching celebrity award ceremonies.  I'm not one to watch them for 3-4 hours but catching bits and pieces is fun.  The dresses, hairstyle, jewelry - always something beautiful to see.

Finding friends is difficult for a lot of kids on the autistic spectrum.  Some kids can be sociable but socially inappropriate.  Other kids may not want to be sociable at all and perfectly content by themselves.  Ryan is usually the non-sociable type but there are those times when he is outgoing and asks whatever is on his mind.

In the true spirit of the holiday season, it's very important to think of others.  It doesn't matter to me that I don't celebrate Christmas.  It's a time of year when I think of those who do celebrate it.  I've explained to Ryan that there are many people who are less fortunate and won't have any gifts to open.  Isn't it wonderful if we can brighten their day and make the holiday special for them?
