As much as I wish Ryan did not watch Family Guy, I doubt that's going to happen anytime soon.  It can be funny at times but in general, it's not one of my favorite shows.  But when there is a Family Guy marathon and I want to spend time with him, I'm stuck watching it.

How many times have we seen the Batman movies?  I'm not referring to the old versions but the movies that began with Michael Keaton.  Between Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Christian Bale - I can't even tell you - it has been that many.  Over and over - pick a channel and there is a Batman movie.  Great news for Ryan!

When I was on the phone the other night, I interrupted my call to tell Ryan he needed to take a shower.  The person I was talking to felt that he shouldn't have to be reminded.  At 18 years old, he shouldn't have to be told to take a shower, brush his teeth or anything else related to proper hygiene.  He should know by now.   In some respects, she was right.  She made the remarks out of love - I understood where she was coming from.

I am SO grateful to the people I meet who are understanding of Ryan and his issues.  I'm not making excuses for when Ryan does something impulsive or speaks inappropriately.  I constantly remind him about personal space, facial expressions, tone of voice and listening skills.  But sometimes, they just go out the window.

I think we can all tend to be creatures of habit.  In my world, Ryan's habits are so ingrained that when something changes, he is beside himself.  Recently, I went to my neighborhood McDonald's to get a late night snack.  Yes - I feed my son fast food and he manages just fine.  I was working late and since he'd had an early dinner, I called to see if he wanted anything.  Of course, the answer was yes.

That's something I hear quite often with Ryan.  He won't eat something because of the way it smells, looks, feels or just doesn't "sound" like he would like it.  He loves macaroni and cheese these days.  At this point, it's out of the box - many thanks to Kraft!

In the never ending search to find activities and peer groups for Ryan, I've found another one.  I don't know why I didn't think of them before and wished I had.  I guess everything happens when it's supposed to. I just wonder why sometimes I don't think of them sooner.

Anyone who knows me is well aware that I've worked hard at teaching my kids proper manners.  It could pertain to manners during conversation, at the kitchen table, in a restaurant or anywhere they're called for.  But what do you do when your child's way of doing things supersedes the need for proper etiquette?

Keeping up on current events is important for anyone.  Even though Ryan may not understand the details, it's very important that he knows what is going on in the U.S. and internationally.  One of his classes actually discusses current events and his assignment is to report something every Friday. It can be about anything which is wonderful because he's not limited to any specific topic.

I'm the first consumer who welcomes new ways of packaging and promoting their products.  While I may not be interested in many of them, some are quite useful.  Crystal Light came out with a liquid and you just squirt it into your water bottle.  Very handy and easy to use.  The individual powder packets were okay but this is much better because you can easily use just enough liquid for your individual taste.  I only use the liquid but once or twice a month but when I do, it's great.
What a great summer!
