Anyone who knows me is well aware that I've worked hard at teaching my kids proper manners.  It could pertain to manners during conversation, at the kitchen table, in a restaurant or anywhere they're called for.  But what do you do when your child's way of doing things supersedes the need for proper etiquette?

Keeping up on current events is important for anyone.  Even though Ryan may not understand the details, it's very important that he knows what is going on in the U.S. and internationally.  One of his classes actually discusses current events and his assignment is to report something every Friday. It can be about anything which is wonderful because he's not limited to any specific topic.

I'm the first consumer who welcomes new ways of packaging and promoting their products.  While I may not be interested in many of them, some are quite useful.  Crystal Light came out with a liquid and you just squirt it into your water bottle.  Very handy and easy to use.  The individual powder packets were okay but this is much better because you can easily use just enough liquid for your individual taste.  I only use the liquid but once or twice a month but when I do, it's great.

Ryan is taking a culinary class and the latest assignment was to select a chef that you liked.  Students had to answer specific questions about them such as their education, why they wanted to be a chef, their specialty, etc.  In looking on the internet, none of the chefs interested Ryan.  No surprise to me because he had no connection to them.

I took Ryan to services to celebrate the Jewish New Year.  I've always said that every child or adult should always be welcome as a member of the congregation.  I'm sure that Ryan could care less if he went to services but it's something I've always instilled in him.  I'm sure there is not a clear understanding on his part of what is being read.  It's the experience of being with others to celebrate an important holiday that is important to me.

Another joy of the internet for Ryan - he is reminded of places that he hasn't visited in ages.  He sees an ad and remembers how much he enjoyed eating there.  Restaurants are a HUGE part of Ryan's world.  It's a good thing he's not looking for lobster or filet - that's not quite in my budget. Typically, he's searching for hamburgers, hot dogs or chicken tenders.

There are some moments you wish you could just freeze in time.  Moments when your child does something so unexpected and so kind.

Recently, my boyfriend's mother was very sick and had to be taken to the emergency room.  While I knew it was not life threatening, she needed medical care as quickly as possible.  I told Ryan that I felt she would be fine but I was taking her to the hospital.  I would call him when I had an update but would be busy taking care of her.  No problem - he's used to me going to the hospital.  Sad but true because my mother is 83 and my boyfriend's mother is turning 80.

Every child should learn how to do laundry!  Unless there is a physical limitation that prevents them from doing so, anyone can be taught what to do.  It promotes independence and regardless of their special needs, every child should learn to do things on their own.  I've always encouraged this with both of my kids and encourage other families as well.

Wouldn't life be great if I always knew what would happen next?  It would make Ryan's life so much easier.  To me, it would be boring but Ryan would love it.  He'd never have to worry if it will rain, if his to go order is prepared correctly or how long it takes to drive somewhere.
What a great summer!
Many thanks to Outback Steakhouse!!!!!
