Recently, my boyfriend's mother was very sick and had to be taken to the emergency room.  While I knew it was not life threatening, she needed medical care as quickly as possible.  I told Ryan that I felt she would be fine but I was taking her to the hospital.  I would call him when I had an update but would be busy taking care of her.  No problem - he's used to me going to the hospital.  Sad but true because my mother is 83 and my boyfriend's mother is turning 80.

Every child should learn how to do laundry!  Unless there is a physical limitation that prevents them from doing so, anyone can be taught what to do.  It promotes independence and regardless of their special needs, every child should learn to do things on their own.  I've always encouraged this with both of my kids and encourage other families as well.

Wouldn't life be great if I always knew what would happen next?  It would make Ryan's life so much easier.  To me, it would be boring but Ryan would love it.  He'd never have to worry if it will rain, if his to go order is prepared correctly or how long it takes to drive somewhere.

Fascinated by so many new products on television, Ryan has added another one to the list.  To me, it sounds awful.  I can't even imagine tasting this.  But to Ryan, he wants so much to try them.  Bacon dogs!  That's right, hot dogs with bacon in them.  I love bacon and I love hot dogs but together, not on my plate.

We celebrated a wonderful milestone this past weekend - my mom turned 83 years old.  Having most of her family with her was very special and while she wishes everyone could have been with her, it just wasn't possible.

We enjoy going out for a lovely dinner and this celebration was no different.  Ryan has been to upscale restaurants before and done fairly well.  This time, I knew we would be dining for a long time since it was a Saturday night and we were a large party.  My concern was that Ryan is fine for about 45-60 minutes.  Shortly after that, he needs to stand up and walk around.  It's not a problem that he has to wash his hands 2-3 times during dinner because he can easily come back and take his seat.  It's the pacing that can be problematic.

As much as Ryan is in his own world, he can still be very observant.  In going to the movies the other day, he noticed how empty the concession stand was. We have worked on social skills since he was a toddler.  You never would have known that day.

You’re probably thinking “What could Judy possibly write in her blog about a coffee table”?  I was cleaning my apartment today and dusting in the family room.  I cleared off the coffee table so I could clean it.  I happened to take notice of all of the permanent items on the table.

If only it were true - wouldn't life be grand?  I could donate to more charities and help others - what an incredible feeling it would be!  But e-mails like this frighten me - AGAIN!  I've written about this before and will again and again.  I can't stress enough how people on the autistic spectrum have the increased potential to be targets of fraud.  We're all targets, I know.  But people with special needs are taken advantage of even more.

The joys of the weekend - no alarm, late breakfast and just relaxing.  Ryan really looks forward to something different for breakfast.  It's not the usual healthy cereal kind of day and he loves either pancakes or cinnamon rolls.  Don't get excited - these are not homemade cinnamon rolls.  The kind in the can work just fine thanks to the Pillsbury dough boy!

Like most kids, when I asked Ryan how his day was at school - he just says it was fine.  That's about all I get out of him.  It isn't until later in the day or into the evening that he tells me something.
What a great summer!
