I recently had lunch at a local cafe and didn't expect to see students at the table next to mine. I didn't think there was a high school in the area and thought maybe they were on a field trip.  The kids looked really nice but I could tell they might be a bit different.  I can't explain it but I just knew.

The holidays are a wonderful time but they can also be difficult for people with special needs.  This doesn't just apply to a child like mine on the autistic spectrum - it could be anyone with special needs.  Anxiety, social phobia, depression - gatherings where there are a lot of people and even new people to meet can be most stressful.  So what can be done?  Accommodations - that's what can be done!

I went to the grocery store today to pick up just a few things.  One of those items was a carton of eggs.  I always have the carton wrapped in a plastic bag.  It took only one time for them to fall out of a paper bag and there was a mess everywhere in my kitchen.  I usually bring reusable grocery bags but forgot to today.

I recently participated in a conference and tradeshow.  It was a wonderful collaboration
of religious institutions and community groups that wanted to educate the area about
special needs, offer a variety of speakers and had vendors like myself who could promote
their services.  Always wanting to promote my speaking engagements and book - I was
happy to be a part of this event.

Recently,  Ryan came home from school with a huge bump on his forehead.  I was very concerned and asked him how it happened.  He said "It's fine."  I explained it wasn't fine and I was worried.  My first fear was that some kids could have pushed him against a wall or against the lockers.  He assured me that didn't happen.  That was a relief!  But I still had to find out how he got such a bump.  I kept pressing him for more information.  Finally, he told me.

Regardless of whether or not you are on the autistic spectrum, anyone can have an aversion toward insects.  Personally, I have always hated any kind of insects.  I'm terrified of bees, wasps, hornets, roaches - you name it!  I know it doesn't help that as a teenager, I was stung by a bee and had an allergic reaction.  My leg was swollen for four days and I was in terrible pain.  There was discussion of my carrying an emergency kit in case this happened again but I never did.

It's not uncommon for families with special needs kids to find a place to worship.  I've had many parents share painful stories that their place of worship does not accept their child.  This breaks my heart!

I am so grateful that my clergy have always welcomed my children.  It doesn't matter what religion I am - it only matters that we are accepted as a family.  We come as a package and are always welcomed as a package.  Shouldn't every place of worship be like that?

Dear Hanes......

I realize you have been in business since 1901 and clearly, you are very successful at manufacturing great products.  I love your products but need to let you know how your changes in design affect special needs children like mine.  I hope you don't mind me sharing my thoughts with you.  I want your company to be in touch with consumers like me because it's important that you know how we feel.

One of our favorite shows is on The Disney Channel.  It's a great kids show and while most of the kids are academically smart, one of the kids is not the brightest when it comes to common sense.  In many ways, the show is like my world.  But that's another blog entry.
