This is a blog about Judy's World.

One of our favorite shows is on The Disney Channel.  It's a great kids show and while most of the kids are academically smart, one of the kids is not the brightest when it comes to common sense.  In many ways, the show is like my world.  But that's another blog entry.

Hot temperatures, humidity and rain - welcome to Houston!  Yes - we have our share of dry summers but lately, rain has been in our forecast.

One of the BEST parts about Ryan's summer social skills programs is the field trips.  The teachers are fabulous and the real life experiences they take the kids on are invaluable.  They ride the Metro bus, go to restaurants, grocery stores, staffing agencies, the local college and more.

There are so many rituals in my house that I can't keep track.  And while I know Ryan thrives on each one of them there are times when the ritual has to be modified because this is part of life.  He will survive and while it may seem earth shattering to him - I reassure him that he will be okay.

Most things don't surprise me but some days - I'm really caught off guard.

I was watching TV with Ryan and there was a commercial for deodorant.  It was for women and he started to laugh.  I couldn't understand what he was laughing at.

It breaks my heart that Ryan is pulling his hair out again.  Our first episode was in Elementary School and it was awful.  He had a huge stripe down the center of his forehead. It broke my heart that he had so much anxiety or OCD that it manifested itself in this way.  Finally, the hair grew back and the episodes since have not been nearly as severe.

I know that for many kids, the end of the school year is a welcome relief.  Burned out from homework, exams, research papers and projects - the kids are excited to finally relax.  While Ryan eagerly awaits the end of school, it's not as though he had a ton of homework, papers to write or projects to complete.  In fact, he had very little.

Sometimes that breakdown in communication can be so frustrating.  Show me the mother of a teenager who is having trouble telling his mother what he needs and I'll show you 20 mothers who are having trouble.  Show me the mother of a teenager with autism who is having trouble and I'll show you 60 mothers who are having trouble.  All teenagers can have their moments and have trouble explaining what they want.  But kids like Ryan have even more moments.

When I called to check in Ryan, he told me that someone had called for Uncle Jeffrey.  My brother stayed with us for a week while receiving medical treatment and I figured that someone was calling in reference to that.  Since we have caller ID, I asked Ryan if he remembered which number it was.  Since he did, I asked him what the area code was.

I just took Ryan to see "The Avengers".  What a fabulous movie!  We both loved it and it was so fun to take him.  As in any movie, I try not to sit too close to other people because he sometimes talks a lot during the movie or makes noises due to his Tourette Syndrome.  The movie was just about to start and we were in good shape.  There was no one directly in front of us or behind us.  There were people to the side of us a few seats over but I wasn't too concerned.  Then three boys came and sat directly in front of us.  Uh oh - I started to get a bit nervous.  Please don't think I'm ashamed of Ryan - this is not the case at all.  He has every right to be at the movies and I want him to enjoy the experience of the big screen and special effects.  But out of my courtesy to others, I do get nervous because he can be disruptive.
What a great summer!
