Ryan turns 17 years old today!  I am so proud of him!  He is so sweet, funny and soooooo Ryan!  He is finishing up his sophomore year in high school.  I remember when I went to visit the school when he was in 8th grade.  I cried because the school was so big and I was afraid he wouldn't make it.  We've had our problems but they have been worked out.  There are 3400+ students at the school and I was very scared he would get lost.  But with lots of practice, he finds his way around.

A huge tradition in Houston is the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  It is an amazing event that raises money for college scholarships.  Rides, vendors, steer auctions, petting zoos - the rodeo does so much for so many kids.

I was crushed to hear of this story about a teenage girl in Ohio who has special needs.  She was bullied at school but NOT by her peers.  She was bullied by her teachers.  Please watch this story - http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/45302947/ns/today-parenting_and_family/t/teachers-caught-tape-bullying-special-needs-girl/

One of the local Temples in our area had an all inclusive Friday night service.  While everyone is welcome to all services, the Temple wanted to make an extra special effort and it was wonderful that they did.  They had light appetizers before the service and had a couple of special needs adults assist with the service.

I am so happy for the youth groups that Ryan can be a part of.  He is involved in three of them and they are all wonderful in their own way.  The first is called The Friendship Circle.  They have monthly activities and Ryan is paired with a typically developing teenager.  The second is called Best Buddies and it's at his high school.  Again, he is paired up with another teenager who is a friend to him.  The third youth group is called Yachad.  It is an all inclusive youth group.  Another great group of kids but this time, he is not paired up with anyone specifically.  All kids are included and their motto is "because everyone belongs".

It's that time of year to confirm the class schedule for next year.  Since Ryan is currently in co-teach classes (he has two teachers in the class) - this will no longer be an option for 11th grade.  His classes could be a larger class size and only have one teacher.  The work is definitely getting harder for him and his anxiety is increased because of it.  So what do to about next year?

It's so interesting what we sometimes take for granted and assume our kids just know the answer to.  Usually, I figure that Ryan does not know the answer but this time, I must say I was a bit surprised.

Yes - that is the name of the restaurant.  When Ryan visits his dad in Florida, he loves going there.  I was told it's the best and he would love for me to go there.  He did understand when I explained I won't be in Florida anytime soon so I won't be able to go.  But then he looked on their website and there it was - a restaurant in Houston.  Ryan was SO excited!

It's a question that I ask myself often.  I've always told my kids to try their best in school.  I realize that certain classes will be challenging and their grades will be lower than I had hoped.  But if they completed the assignments and put forth the effort, I accepted it because some subjects can be difficult for them or any child.

Two different groups that we belong to had activities today.  One was a volunteer project making sandwiches for the homeless and the other was decorating potted plants.  I loved both of them because it's another chance to interact with others.  Would Ryan rather stay home?  Of course.  But I've stressed that it's so important to attend the programs that people put on because we want to support them.
