Just when he thought it was safe to go into the shower - Ryan asked me if shampoo causes your hair to fall out.  You would think I wouldn't be surprised by these questions but I actually was.  I think that I was surprised because by age 16, I figured he would know that shampoo doesn't cause your hair to fall out.  Clearly, I was wrong.

I'm so proud that Ryan belongs to an all inclusive youth group and participates in a wide range of activities.  Recently, the group volunteered at Aishel House.  This is an amazing organization that provides housing and meals to families from all over the world who are receiving medical treatment in Houston.  Houston is known for its stellar doctors and medical facilities.  Aishel House helps families at this difficult time when they are in a strange city.

My friend's husband is in a professional networking group.  They put me in touch with the program coordinator to see if they were interested in having me as a speaker.  They were!!!

Yes, that was the time Ryan had at the dance he went to last night.  It wasn't just any dance.  The social skills class he attended during the summer was meeting again for a dance.  I think it is wonderful that they have these activities so the kids keep in touch and are able to participate in a dance like their friends.

For the next two weeks, the Jewish community in Houston is hosting a fabulous book fair.  Authors fly in from all over the world to speak about their latest book.  The Houston Book Fair is one of the best in the country and has been held for almost 40 years.

It was an amazing weekend!!!!  I spoke to 150+ kids plus families to kickoff a youth group conclave about special needs awareness.  I spoke about my experiences raising two boys with disabilities the world cannot see.  I also spoke about bullying and the need to raise awareness, tolerance and compassion for those who are different than the rest of us.

I am SO excited.  One of the area Temples is hosting the youth group Fall conclave this weekend.  Their theme is disability awareness and they asked me to be their keynote speaker at the Friday night service.  I'll also be conducting two workshops on Saturday.

We went to services last night at my Temple.  I wanted to take Ryan and encourage him to go with me on occasion.  As usual, he doesn't like to go because he would rather stay home.  Unless the outing involves a movie, bowling or food - his couch is his first choice.

I had the honor of speaking at a Lions Club luncheon the other day.  I met some of the most dedicated volunteers from a wonderful organization.  They do so much to help our community and even sponsor a summer camp for special needs kids.  I was thrilled they asked me to speak to their members.

Recently, we went out to dinner with my family.  Usually, it's just casual.  But on these two occasions, we had something to celebrate so we went to much nicer restaurants.  The first place easy because I knew Ryan could have his plain pasta or a gourmet pizza with just bread and the cheese - no pizza sauce.  It would be some of the most expensive pasta and pizza he ever at but that's okay.  The second place specialized in fish and steaks - neither of which Ryan will eat.  So for $12.95, he had chicken tenders and fries.  Again, way too much money for what he ate but there was nothing I could do.  And I had to laugh because he didn't even finish the dinner.  He said it was just okay.  So I tried the chicken and of course - it was great.  But to Ryan, it wasn't Wendy's, McDonald's or Burger King.  Or even a fast casual restaurant would have been better in his mind.  Clearly, he didn't know these were so muc better.
